Capital Christian Homeschool is a Nonprofit (501(c)(3))

While many members of the Capital Christian Homeschool Community have worked together since 2023, the Capital Christian Homeschool Community of Michigan was officially established in 2025 and became a legal nonprofit at that time.

The purposes for which the nonprofit corporation is formed are to:

  1. Provide educational learning opportunities for Christian homeschool families as a homeschool support group for parents.
  2. Organize and host educational opportunities in the Lansing and Michigan area for homeschool families.
  3. Connect Christian families and homeschool students.
  4. Provide educational field trips to enrich classroom learning for homeschool families.
  5. To receive and administer a fund or funds of real or personal property in furtherance of the foregoing purposes.
  6. To acquire real and personal property by purchase, gift, grant, devise or bequest, and to hold, own, accept and dispose of the same for the particular objects of the Corporation.
  7. To conduct any and all activities and exercise any and all powers as may be necessary or helpful to the achievement of the foregoing purposes for which the corporation is organized.
  8. To engage in similar activities that may be carried on by a corporation that is exempt from federal income tax pursuant to Section 501 (c)(3) of the Internal Revenue Code (“Code”).

Church Affiliation

There is no affiliation between Capital Christian and the church where we hold our community days.

Capital Christian Homeschool welcomes families from a variety of Christ-following and Bible-believing churches. However, we do ask all families to read and confirm that their beliefs align with the Capital Christian Homeschool Statement of Faith before becoming a member.

Decision Making

All final decisions for Capital Christian Homeschool of Michigan are the responsibility of the volunteer board of directors, including classes, curricula, and location of community days.

Before finalizing classes and curricula for the coming year, the board of directors touches base with parents willing to help facilitate the classes. Taking the facilitator’s input and the goals of the community into consideration, the board makes a final decision.

Board of Directors

The Volunteer Board is made up of parents who dedicate their time to support the group, often investing 20 hrs a week in administrative work for the community. The goal of the board is to ensure a well-organized learning experience that aligns with the organization’s objectives and adheres to the statement of faith.

Board positions are year-long terms to provide a variety of voices, energy, and opinions as the group continues year by year.   After the first year, open board positions will be filled by the board members’ selection and vote.

An important piece of the leadership board team is the creation of bylaws to ensure that any decision made is transparent and fair. No board member’s voice is more important than another’s, and any disagreements will be resolved amicably through a vote of the board.

Meet the Leadership Team

Andrea Larsen is on the leadership team as the president of Capital Christian Homeschool. She has helped lead homeschool groups in the Lansing area since 2014. Before homeschooling, she taught college writing classes. She enjoys sharing her love of writing with her students. She also likes traveling and exploring new places with her family. Andrea is helping with:

Andrea Tello is on the leadership team as the vice president of Capital Christian Homeschool. She was a public school teacher for 13 years before homeschooling. She has taught writing classes with ProCom for many years now, including language arts, choir, debate, and theater. Andrea also has a background in theater and music and loves sharing those passions with students. Andrea is helping with:

Chelsea Wakley is on the leadership team as secretary of Capital Christian Homeschool. She has been involved in the Lansing homeschool community for nearly a decade. She has helped teach, lead, and assist in a variety of educational activities with kids. Chelsea also helps her husband run their business, Reel Michigan Anglers. Chelsea enjoys fishing with her family. Chelsea helps with:

Cheryl Bliss is on the leadership team as treasurer of Capital Christian Homeschool. She is a nationally certified ASL interpreter since 2007, and her family has been sharing sign language classes with the homeschool community for many years now. Cheryl enjoys making learning hands-on, interactive, and engaging for students. Cheryl enjoys outdoor adventures and birding with her family. Cheryl helps with:

  • Financial Communications

Heidi Johnson is on the leadership team as assistant treasurer of Capital Christian Homeschool. She has been involved in local homeschool groups for the past six years, serving in a variety of roles along the way. She taught preschool, directed children’s choir, and taught and directed theater. When she’s not homeschooling, she enjoys baking, most outdoor activities, and a good book. Heidi helps with:

Erin Wells works with the above board members to help with facilities, setup, and cleanup work, and to oversee the science hour. She has helped lead academic support groups since 2020. Erin has years of teaching experience, having taught gymnastics, dance, science, and electives. She enjoys dancing and sewing. Erin is helping with:

  • Set-Up and Clean-Up Coordinator
  • Facilities Communications
  • Science Hour Subject Area Coordinator
